Best known for playing Lieutenant Dan in the 1994 film Forrest Gump, Gary Sinise has raised more than $300 million through his foundation since 2011 to support wounded veterans, first responders, and their families.
The foundation’s flagship R.I.S.E. (Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment) programme builds fully funded, specially adapted smart homes for severely injured veterans and first responders. Designed to meet individual needs, the homes feature accessible bathrooms, wider hallways and smart technology. In November 2025, the foundation celebrated completing its 100th home, donated to retired U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Joe Bowser. It has also provided more than a million meals to military personnel, while Gary’s Dan Band has performed hundreds of concerts for troops.
Gary’s dedication to supporting veterans began in the early 1980s, long before the foundation was established. His connection deepened through his portrayal of Lieutenant Dan, a wounded Vietnam veteran rebuilding his life. He recognises that many service members struggle to admit when they need help, explaining that the foundation aims to address their reluctance to show vulnerability.
In 2025, the foundation reported more than $91 million in revenue and received a four-star Charity Navigator rating, with approximately 90 per cent of donations going directly towards its programmes. Through hospital visits, home dedications and performances, Gary continues to support those who have served, often away from the public spotlight.
